Supervisors ask CAO to review county roles with Current Health Systems board amid governance concerns

The Kern County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 25 directed the County Administrative Office to produce a review of the county’s roles and responsibilities with respect to Current Health Systems, a healthcare entity serving low-income patients in the county.
A supervisor read a letter from the mayor of McFarland thanking the county for enforcement against illegal vendors and then raised broader interest in county health-care oversight. The supervisor asked the CAO to review how the county appoints members to the Current Health Systems board, what governance options exist (for example changing board size), and other steps the county might take to ensure proper governance and oversight.
Supervisor Couch seconded the request and described the matter as critical, calling for a "deep dive" review. The board moved, seconded and voted to direct the CAO to return with options and analysis; the clerk recorded the vote as "all ayes."
Why it matters: Current Health Systems provides a large share of care for low-income residents in Kern County; governance and appointment processes affect oversight, accountability and the county’s ability to ensure service continuity. The board’s referral asks staff to clarify the county’s authority and options for change.
