Commission tables countywide fire-consolidation study after cities ask for more information

Habersham County commissioners voted to table a proposed study that would evaluate consolidation of city and county fire departments after municipal leaders asked for further detail on scope and cost.

Background: County staff said several municipalities approached the county last year about consolidating their city fire departments into the county fire system. The county engaged a consultant, Paramedic Consulting (represented in the meeting by Thad Dixon), to evaluate equipment, personnel, response times and other metrics and to recommend options for consolidation. Staff said the proposed study would cost $55,000 and that, in initial discussions with cities, the county had been asked to fund the study.

Why it matters: A consolidation study would provide comparative data—similar to an ISO review—about current fire coverage and potential efficiencies, but would not commit any municipality to consolidate. Commissioners expressed concern about the $55,000 expense and asked for more information before committing county funds. One commissioner said the topic will be discussed at the county’s winter retreat.

Action taken: The commission voted to table the matter and asked staff to return with additional detail on scope and cost. Commissioners noted that the study is on the winter retreat agenda for Feb. 13 for fuller discussion.

What’s next: Staff will compile additional information for the board and for city partners. No consolidation decisions will be made as a result of the study without subsequent approval by the affected municipalities and the commission.
