Lakeland School reports progress on safety drills and reunification planning

Principal Smith told the Walworth County Children with Disabilities Education Board on Feb. 19 that Lakeland School is meeting statutory requirements for safety drills and has identified several improvements to speed and clarify evacuations.
Smith said Wisconsin Statute 118.07 requires regular safety drills for schools and that administrators must follow recording and reporting rules. Lakeland staff are adding visual markers so students have clear anchors for evacuation staging and will use a zones approach so staff working building‑wide have a check‑in system. The school plans a tabletop exercise in March and a full reunification walkthrough in April.
Smith thanked school leaders and deputies for their work on drills and said debriefs after drills are being used to refine procedures. No board action was required; the item was an informational update.
