Principal Smith updated the Walworth County Children with Disabilities Education Board that Lakeland School is proposing a five‑minute extension to the daily schedule for the 2025–26 school year to better align with local district calendars and to increase instructional and professional-development time.
Smith said Wisconsin Act 257 eliminated a strict 180‑day requirement in favor of instructional hours, and many neighboring districts adjusted minutes per day to meet their hour totals. Adding five minutes per day, along with optimizing passing periods, would accumulate to roughly five extra days’ worth of instructional time over a school year, Smith said, allowing in‑service days and consistent end dates for families with siblings in other districts.
Smith said hourly staff schedules (currently 8:10 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.) would not change and that assistant principal Nora had contacted transportation providers; three responded that the change would help coordinating other routes and others acknowledged the notice. The board asked no substantive questions; Smith said the proposed day extension and calendar options will return for approval in March when the board considers the 2025–26 calendar.
