Extension horticulture staff roll out new soil, pruning and container‑growing workshops

The horticulture outreach specialist told the Walworth County Agriculture Extension Education Committee on Feb. 17 that three new programs are launching in the coming weeks, beginning with “Understanding Your Garden Soil” and followed by a hands‑on tree pruning workshop in partnership with UW‑Whitewater’s continuing education and sustainability office.
The specialist said the soil program will cover soil testing, interpreting results and fertilizer application, including understanding nitrogen‑phosphorus‑potassium ratios and ways to avoid overapplication that can cause environmental contamination.
A March 1 pruning workshop will include a classroom session and a hands‑on pruning segment using apple trees provided by UW‑Whitewater’s campus garden; participants will practice pruning after a classroom lesson. The specialist also said a pumpkin‑and‑vine‑crop program will be held at the government center while the partnering library undergoes renovation.
The specialist reported an active spring programming schedule, with frequent workshops planned across Walworth County and neighboring counties the specialist serves.
