Extension educator Melissa to move to statewide role; county discusses hiring a shared community development specialist

Melissa, an extension educator who serves Trempealeau County, told the meeting she has accepted a new position with Extension that will serve every county in the state and begins March 1. "I will not be housed in the courthouse any longer, but, I'm serving, every county in the state," Melissa said.
Board members and staff discussed next steps for filling the local role. Clark County had voted to continue shared support for a Community Development Institute (CDI) specialist at the 50% level, and county staff said Trempealeau County needs to decide whether to submit a request to fill the shared position.
Staff outlined four possible program focus areas for the shared CDI position: community economic development, organizational and leadership development, community food systems, and local government services. Clark County expressed a preference for community economic development and organizational leadership development; staff noted Clark County also wanted some agricultural emphasis.
Melissa said some duties she previously performed — such as clean sweep campaigns and water testing coordination — would need reassignment if the new hire does not include those responsibilities. County staff discussed making the local government education work overlapping with Melissa’s continuing local responsibilities, and assigning the new hire a complementary focus.
The meeting did not record a final hiring decision or a completed job description. Staff said they will prepare a request to fill the position and clarify the primary focus area once Trempealeau County reaches a decision.
