Commissioners discuss forming Harnett County historical commission to support museum efforts

Members of a community group seeking to create a Harnett County Historical Museum asked the board to consider forming a county historical commission to formalize their organization and access set-aside grant funds.
The group has been meeting intermittently for 18 months to two years, according to county staff, and currently stores artifacts in space provided by the Willingdon Museum. County staff said some OSBM grant funds were set aside that could support a formalized commission and that creating a commission would allow the group to pursue funding and establish bylaws and a governance structure.
Commissioners questioned how the commission would be funded, how members would be selected and who would serve on an executive body. County staff proposed a minimum five-member commission with one representative from each county district to ensure geographic representation. Commissioners asked staff to work with Vice Chairman Morris to develop more detail on membership, purpose, bylaws and staffing support before the item returns for further consideration.
No formal action was taken; staff were directed to draft a proposed framework and report back for review.
