Resident asks Raymore City Council to consider legalizing backyard chickens

Laura Jarrell, a Raymore resident who gave her address as 521 Forest View Court, asked the City Council on Feb. 24 to consider legalizing backyard chickens for egg production and to adopt rules similar to those in other area cities and in a recently passed state HOA law.
Jarrell said she represents “hundreds of people” in a local Facebook group who want the option to keep a small number of hens. “It’s nothing crazy. I don’t want 20 chickens in my backyard or anything, but just for eggs,” she told the council, adding that some families buy multiple dozen eggs a week and would benefit from keeping hens.
Jarrell suggested limits and basic standards to address common concerns, including restricting birds to non-slaughter uses, limiting numbers consistent with lot size, requiring coops to be gated and managed to reduce odor, and using sand or other bedding to control smell. She asked the council to compare Raymore’s rules with those in Pleasant Hill and Lee’s Summit and to consider putting the subject on a future agenda for possible action.
Her remarks came during the public-appearance portion of the meeting. No formal action or motion on backyard poultry was recorded at the Feb. 24 meeting.
