Cowlitz County commissioners approved a one-time $12,560 engagement with WWT (agenda item No. 5) to bring softphone functionality and SIP call circuitry to the county's recently purchased phone system.
Travis, the county IT director, told commissioners the feature set will let employees make and receive county calls from a computer or a mobile application while representing the county extension number. He described softphone functionality as allowing calls to be placed and received from a computer using a headset and said SIP services will replace the county's legacy PRI connection with a modern, more scalable carrier connection.
Travis said the county purchased the phone system about two years ago and the WWT engagement completes planned functionality that had not yet been implemented. The commission voted to approve the motion to contract with WWT; the motion passed on the vote recorded at the meeting.
Why this matters: the upgrade will allow greater portability for county employees, unified voicemail/directory access and a transition from PRI to SIP trunking, which the IT director described as an industry-standard modernization.
