Organizers ask council for help finishing Wyuka mosaic project; $1M still needed

Representatives of the Wyuka mosaic restoration project asked the Lincoln City Council during public comment for help finding the remaining funds needed to finish a large mosaic mural at Wyuka Cemetery.
Retired Major General Roger Lemke and volunteer Liz Shea McCoy told the council the project has removed roughly 76–77% of damaged tile and is ready to begin construction of tilt-up concrete sections this summer. Lemke said the campaign has raised about $3.1 million and needs roughly $1 million more to finish the work and proceed with installation and related programming. "We are shovel ready," Lemke said, and asked councilmembers to share potential funding sources or donor contacts.
McCoy described additional project features, including a tactile model to be placed at the Nebraska History Museum for people with visual impairments and a seven-session lesson plan for middle- and high-school educators to use when bringing classes to the site. Organizers said the finished installation could be a major tourism draw and noted they are prepared to proceed as soon as funding is secured.
Councilmembers did not take formal action on the request during the meeting; organizers said they would follow up with staff and remain available to brief councilmembers in more detail.
