Council adopts resolution 6368 extending skate park lighting hours through evenings on weekends

Jeanette Gantt, Director of Parks and Recreation Community Services, presented the item and said that because the skate-park lights had been used after dark and city staff and police observed consistent positive use, staff proposed setting the regular hours in the municipal resolution. The adopted hours are: from 30 minutes before sunrise until 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 30 minutes before sunrise until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The resolution retains authority for the city manager or the city manager's designee to adjust hours for maintenance or approved special events.
Public comment from community advocates, including Peter Bonning of the Carboniiscate Foundation, supported the extended lighting hours as an asset that enables programming, evening events and safe recreational use. Bonning described multiple free community events hosted at the park and called the lights a "huge asset." Council members also praised the park, volunteers and providers of after-school programming who use the space.
Motion and vote: A council member moved to adopt Resolution 6368; the motion received a second and passed by voice vote (recorded in the meeting transcript as unanimous voice vote). The motion and vote were taken in open session; the mayor closed public comment before the vote.
