Peoria County seeks new permanent electronics recycler after partner left; household hazardous waste dates pending

Peoria County sustainability staff told the committee that a private recycler that had served as the county’s permanent electronics drop-off is no longer available, creating an immediate need for either a new permanent site or more one-day collections.
Becca, sustainability staff, said the county may either recruit a private recycler to expand and serve as a permanent location or schedule additional one-day collections. Staff explained that the state clearinghouse requires recyclers to fill a semi trailer (about 18,000 pounds) before shipping; if a trailer is not full, additional fees apply. Becca said that last year a West Peoria one-day collection collected about 17,000 pounds and Limestone Township’s one-day collection collected about 11,000 pounds, suggesting one-day events are often large enough to fill a trailer.
Becca said the county was allocated one permanent location and four one-day collections through the Illinois EPA clearinghouse for the current program year; losing the private partner leaves the county looking for alternatives and asking the clearinghouse for leniency this year while a replacement is found. She said staff are discussing options with private recyclers and townships and will publicize one-day collection dates if needed.
Sustainability staff also reported that Best Buy, E-Cycle and Goodwill remain partner options for certain electronics: staff said Best Buy accepts some brand models for free and charges for other televisions, Goodwill accepts computers and peripherals free, and E-Cycle accepts larger LCDs and some CRTs for fees; the county will post a table of accepted items and partner links on its website. Recycle Coach (service software) is near a beta launch to provide residents with recycling information. Household hazardous waste event dates are narrowed to two potential dates and will be finalized soon.
