Board holds moment of silence to honor three district employees who died

The Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education honored the lives of three employees who recently died and observed a moment of silence at the Feb. 24 meeting.
Polk Alternative Education Center Principal Michelle Lukowski spoke about the late Brad Teal, who died Jan. 24, 2025. Lukowski said Teal began with the district in 2011, served in special education and facilitator roles at Polk, trained staff in safety care, oversaw Medicaid billing and supported students and staff with behavior management.
Darius Ballard, chief of human resources, spoke about Kelly Layton, a food‑service assistant at Kennedy High School who died Oct. 9, 2024. Ballard said Layton worked in the district since Feb. 21, 2022, and helped feed students daily.
Ian Lemaster, Washington High School principal, spoke about Max Pike, a former Jefferson High School graduate and University of Northern Iowa alumnus who taught language arts and advised the GSA; Pike died July 24, 2024. Lemaster described Pike as an advocate for students and thanked Pike's parents, who attended the meeting.
After the remarks the board observed a moment of silence. The remarks were delivered as tributes; no board action followed.
