Parent urges board to do more for students with mental‑health needs

Mary Arenas, a Cedar Rapids parent and district employee, urged the Board of Education to increase supports for students with mental‑health challenges and to address staffing and training for employees who support those students.

Arenas said she is a foster parent and a district employee and described her concerns about how students with attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and trauma‑related needs are identified and supported in schools. She told the board parents frequently provide medical notes from psychiatrists and that staff sometimes read but do not act on the information; she asked the board to ensure such communications reach the right staff. “They’re reading it, but they’re not taking it to heart,” she said.

Arenas said some students have been suspended multiple times in a school year because medication and classroom strategies were not effectively addressing behavior and urged the district to better train staff and bus drivers to work with children who have experienced trauma. She said the wages for some district employees are too low and asked the board to consider pay levels so the district can recruit and retain staff who meet students’ needs. “If you’re gonna pay poverty wages, you’re not gonna get the help,” she said.

The board thanked Arenas for her comments; the public‑comment time was governed by board rules and the board did not engage in dialogue beyond clarifying the scope of public comments.
