The Homewood City Council voted 9–1 on Monday to permanently stripe a four-foot bike lane with a two-foot buffer on Central Avenue. The measure was reported out of the Public Safety committee and carried on the council floor after discussion about the lane’s proposed placement.
Committee members reported a 5–0 recommendation to permanently stripe the lane and buffer. The motion on the council floor was made by Councilor Woolverton and seconded by Councilor Grant; the final recorded tally on the floor was 9 in favor, 1 opposed.
One councilor spoke in opposition to the recommended placement, saying they supported bike lanes generally but preferred locating the lane next to the roadway so street parking could remain adjacent to the curb. The speaker indicated their view was in the minority on the council but did not oppose bike lanes broadly. No formal amendment to the striping plan was adopted during the meeting.
Next steps: staff will implement the striping plan as approved; any additional signage, enforcement or parking changes will be handled by public-safety and public-works staff according to standard procedures.
