DuPage County Board debates extending public-comment time after contentious courthouse-naming dispute; matter sent to finance committee

DuPage County Board members spent a large portion of their Feb. 25 meeting debating whether to extend the board's public-comment period from 30 minutes to 60 minutes after last week's heated meeting about the removal of Henry Hyde's name from the county courthouse. Rather than change the rule on the floor, members agreed to place the issue on the Finance Committee agenda for a rules review.

The discussion followed a meeting earlier this month that board members described as unusually long and contentious. Member Ozog, a DuPage County Board member, said he had voted against extending public participation at that earlier meeting but now wanted a formal discussion of alternatives. "I'd like to discuss the idea of increasing the time to 60 minutes," Ozog said, adding that the board had previously set a three-minute-per-speaker limit and a 30-minute total for public comment.

Why it matters: public-comment rules shape when and how residents are heard at official meetings and affect staff workload and meeting length. Several board members said the county should preserve orderly meetings while accommodating residents who travel to speak in person.
