Council members and staff discussed the feasibility, cost and implementation challenges of a village-run leaf-collection program during the Feb. 24 meeting.
Members noted several cost drivers: equipment upgrades, temporary seasonal workforce needs, disposal/dump-site arrangements and reliability challenges when leaves fall early or late. One council member described a quoted price he paid personally and extrapolated program costs: "I paid $250 to have the guys come by twice. At 1,400 homes, that would be $350,000," he said, adding that such a price point would likely be a non-starter for the village budget.
Council discussed alternatives including encouraging homeowners to mulch leaves with personal mowers, exploring contractors that provide vacuum services, and targeting assistance at residents who cannot perform the work themselves (for example, through the county aging agency). The mayor and street commissioner said they would collect preliminary price estimates from contractors so the street committee can evaluate whether the village should proceed.
Council directed staff to place the item on the street committee agenda and to return contractor ballpark numbers or options for a phased approach.
