The West Haven City Council on Feb. 24 authorized the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Commissioner of Planning and Development to review and act on a plan by Al Shuler’s Building LLC to install outdoor lighting projecting above the city sidewalk at 509 Campbell Avenue.
The Public Lands Committee reported the company received ARPA funding to improve the building façade and presented a plan showing the lighting would be hung at a height that would not impede pedestrian traffic or normal use of the sidewalk. Under Article 4, Section 57.3 of the West Haven Zoning Regulations, any projection into the public right of way requires prior City Council approval before the Planning & Zoning Commission may act; the council’s vote authorized P&Z to consider the application.
Committee members moved the referral out favorably with no objections. The motion recorded in committee and affirmed by the full council passed without opposition that evening.
The authorization does not itself approve the lighting installation; it permits Planning & Zoning and the Commissioner of Planning and Development to conduct their review of the detailed plan and grants them authority to act under the zoning provision subject to any conditions they may impose.
Action: The council voted to authorize Planning & Zoning review under Article 4, Section 57.3 and to file the communication with the minutes. No additional conditions were attached at the council level.
