The Sunnyside City Council directed staff to prepare a revised meeting schedule and materials after the city manager raised concerns about the pace of four regular Monday meetings each month.
City Manager Mike Gonzales told the council staff felt “fatigue” from holding four meetings monthly and recommended eliminating or consolidating meetings to reduce strain on a small staff. Councilors discussed several options, including two regular meetings per month with a study session, keeping three monthly meetings, or retaining four meetings but spacing agendas differently. Staff and council members said the current workload creates repeated information in workshop sessions and creates optics problems for public transparency when decisions appear to be made outside a regular meeting.
After discussion the council reached informal agreement to return to a pattern that includes a study session plus two regular council meetings each month and asked staff to prepare a schedule and materials for the council to adopt. Council directed staff to be mindful of agenda timing and to publish packets with adequate notice. Jackie (city clerk) and staff confirmed the change will require producing fewer, clearer agendas and that meeting start times will be finalized and published by staff.
