The Lawrence Personnel Committee on Feb. 24 moved to send the assistant superintendent of cemeteries reauthorization to the ordinance committee as a committee report after staff said the ordinance language lacked current qualifications.
Acting Personnel Director Attorney Garcia and Cemetery Superintendent Carmen Lopez told the committee the position is budgeted and has not been posted recently; Lopez said the department intentionally waited and is now prepared to post. Council members asked whether the ordinance included education or experience requirements; staff said the ordinance copy in the packet did not include detailed qualifications and that the current ordinance text appeared not to have been updated in many years.
Councilors asked for a drafted job description and updated qualifications so the committee could compare the posting with the ordinance language. The committee agreed to table the item to allow staff to circulate a draft job description and to forward a committee report to ordinance once the qualifications are ready. The motion to send the item as a committee report was seconded and approved by voice vote.
