Oak Park proposes two assistant principal positions as ESSER funds sunset

District leaders told the Oak Park Board of Education on Feb. 10 that the impending expiration of federal ESSER funds will require organizational changes and a proposal to create two assistant principal positions.
Superintendent Abdul Hahe (as introduced at the meeting) and the presenting administrator said ESSER funds were a critical source of pandemic-era support and that the end of those funds has driven a proposal to create one assistant principal at Einstein Elementary School and one at Pepper Elementary School. The presentation said both buildings have enrollments near or above 400 students, and the new positions would be created and filled in accordance with the collective agreement with the Association of Oak Park School Administrators.
During questions, Trustee Clark asked how long filling such positions might take given a tight educator labor market. A district presenter said recent principal and assistant-principal postings have drawn robust interestabout 33 or more applicants for a recent assistant-principal opening. The district said it would return to the board with additional information and urged trustees to consider approving the proposal at a future meeting so the district can maintain leadership capacity and student supports as ESSER funding sunsets.
