Gateway High student representative and community groups report on school activities and hosted events

Braden Bongard, Gateway High School’s student government representative, reported to the board on student activities, upcoming events and recent accomplishments.
"My name is Braden Bongard, and I am the student representative for SGA or Gateway High School," Bongard said. He told the board the high school musical, Once Upon a Mattress, will run April 2–5, with six performances; the school’s prom, themed “Gilded Age Gala,” is scheduled for May 16 at the Carnegie Music Hall foyer. Bongard also recapped recent productions and extracurricular successes: the play Importance of Being Earnest in January; three students who made district chorus (Diana Novak, Elena Ellinger and Parker Abel), with two advancing to regionals; a science club workshop at the Hillman Cancer Research Center and a March 5 student visit; a Flowers of the Month club that arranges monthly bouquets for staff; and varsity wrestling qualifiers as well as unified bocce teams advancing to divisional playoffs. Bongard said the bocce team participated in the Polar Plunge and had raised almost $2,000 as a team.
In public comment, Jeanette Beagle, representing the Murrysville Marlins swim club, thanked the district for hosting the AMS Silver Swim Championships. "We had 32 total teams…621 total swimmers…about 3,243 splashes," Beagle said, and praised district custodial, security and operations staff for supporting a multi‑day event. Board members responded by noting how community events showcase district facilities and contribute to the district’s public profile.
Matt Erickson, CEO of Spectrum Charter School, spoke during non‑agenda public comments to thank the board for its work on Spectrum’s charter renewal. "On behalf of our students, our families, our staff, thank you. We are really looking forward to the next five years," Erickson said.
