Local transit agency expects first hydrogen bus in March; transit hub and Earth Center projects proceed

Representatives from the local transit authority reported Feb. 20 that their first hydrogen bus is expected to arrive in March and that a temporary fueling station is already in place for testing and training.
The transit representative said drivers and mechanics have received training and that the agency will conduct beta testing before placing the vehicle into regular routes. The agency has more hydrogen buses on order.
Officials also reported progress on broader projects: the transit hub and the Earth Center in Eureka have moved past design review and are advancing toward additional design and implementation work anticipated to begin within the next year. The transit representative noted uncertainty about some federal funding streams affecting transit but said staff are monitoring federal developments and tracking funding options.
HCOG staff separately announced an upcoming RFP for a siting analysis for the North State hydrogen fueling station; staff expect to bring consultant recommendations in April.
