Fire department adds two paramedics, installs mobile radios and moves association to 501(c)(3) status

Morgan Township fire department — At the Feb. 24 meeting the fire chief reported staffing changes, equipment installation and organizational paperwork for the department’s association.
The board approved hiring firefighter paramedic Cody Swall and firefighter paramedic Ed Shannon, both effective March 2, 2025, at a rate cited during the meeting of $22.50 per hour. Trustees also accepted the resignation of firefighter paramedic Jeremy Keane, effective Feb. 18, 2025.
Chief Griffith reported the department has received and installed five mobile radios on apparatus; Captain Maddox installed those radios while on duty, which the chief noted reduced outside-vendor costs. The department is awaiting delivery of four portable radios from Motorola to complete the radio component of the project. The chief said the paperwork and legal work for transitioning the department’s association to the Morgan Township Firefighter Association as a 501(c)(3) are complete and tax filings are current.
Chief Griffith also said he met with the local historical society and the township has made storage space available at the community center; staff offered to rearrange additional items if the society needs more space.
At the meeting the trustees approved a resolution to place a renewal of the township fire levy on the November 2025 ballot; county officials had advised that a board resolution is required to put the renewal before voters.
No additional details about levy rate, ballot language or estimated revenue were provided at the meeting.
The chief concluded his report by inviting trustee questions; none were recorded in the public portion of the meeting.
The department will complete radio installations after Motorola delivers the four portables and will proceed with personnel onboarding per the trustees’ approvals.
