Battle Creek schools honor student musicians and Springfield Middle announces culture fair and first middle-school musical

Board members used part of the Feb. 11 meeting to recognize student achievements in music and art and to hear a public comment from Springfield Middle School about upcoming events.

During the student showcase, music instructors and principals presented awards and certificates from the superintendent to several students from Franklin, Fremont International Academy, Lamora Park and other schools. Teacher remarks praised students’ resilience and participation. The board presented small trophies, certificates and letters recognizing the students’ accomplishments.

In public comment, Chris Fulbright, speaking on behalf of Springfield Middle School, said the school will host its third annual culture fair Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; invited board members and the public to attend; announced a Kingman Museum exhibit (nine “creatures” displayed in hallway cases) arriving Wednesday; and said students will mount the school’s first musical in many years through an after‑school theater club that will stage a production in April. Fulbright described broad school-community involvement, including arts classes painting backdrops and an after‑school program building set pieces.

Staff and trustees praised the students and thanked families for attending. The board’s recognition segment emphasized student engagement in arts and music as part of district efforts to highlight “great things” happening in Battle Creek Public Schools.

The board did not take any formal action tied to these recognitions; the presentations were part of the meeting’s education highlights and public comment sections.
