Trussville board approves first reading of two-year academic calendars; second reading set for March

The Trussville City Schools Board of Education approved a first reading of proposed academic calendars for 2025–26 and 2026–27 and set a 30-day public comment period before a final vote at the board’s March meeting.
The district presented two calendar options for each school year. Option 2 for 2025–26 would add an extra day for teacher preparation at the start of the year (three days of preparation), split the student start across two days for alphabet staggered openings, and change a short fall break from Monday–Tuesday to Friday–Monday to better serve working families. For 2026–27, administrators proposed moving the start date to Aug. 3 and ending a week earlier to avoid an unevenly long or short summer caused by calendar alignment.
Dr. Puvi, who helped coordinate calendar feedback, told the board the district balanced teacher work-day requirements and student instruction days while responding to parent and staff input. “Some of the comments we got from our employees and from our parents… is the teachers needed an extra day to prepare for school to start,” Dr. Puvi said, describing the rationale for an additional prep day in one option.
Superintendent Dr. Martin confirmed the calendars are a first reading only and that the board will accept public comments during the 30-day period before the March meeting. The board voted to approve the calendars for first reading by voice vote.
The first-reading approval does not set final dates; the board will return in March for a second reading and final action.
