Toby Sanchez, principal of Yale Green Junior High School, told the Hueneme Elementary School District governing board that the junior high’s holistic approach to instruction and student well‑being has produced steady gains on state and local measures and new campus supports for students.
"At Yale Green Junior High School, we take a holistic approach to student success," Sanchez said, noting an enrollment of "roughly 945 students." He credited teachers’ instructional strategies and district supports for modest gains in recent state English language arts and mathematics scores and for cohort growth across grades 6–8.
Sanchez outlined classroom practices and district resources the school uses to track growth: a focus on literacy and language training, screening with AIMSweb to measure progress before state exams, campus‑wide use of the IXL app for differentiated practice in ELA and math, and participation in dual‑language best‑practice visits. He said teachers have added formative screens and that these data show incremental improvement across grade cohorts.
Beyond academics, Sanchez emphasized the school’s wellness supports. He described the campus Hive Awareness Center and counseling team, and said the center — which opened last year — provides services before school, during lunch and after school. "As of last week we had 128 school‑based mental health services. We've had over 12,000 visits to the wellness center," Sanchez reported, and he stressed that the counseling team is integral to students’ sense of safety and belonging.
Sanchez also highlighted family engagement activities that support culture building: assemblies, family nights, a spelling bee and events run with the African American Parent Council. He noted that Yale Green was recently recognized as a California Purple Star School, a designation for schools that support military‑connected students.
Board members asked a clarifying question about the wellness center hours; Sanchez said it opens at 7:30 a.m. and is open until 3:30 p.m. The presentation was informational and no board action was requested or taken.
