The Duncanville ISD board voted 7-0 to approve Core Construction as the job-order contractor to move 16 double-wide portable buildings to Duncanville High School as temporary instructional space during high school construction.
Ms. Phils, the presenter, told the board the district needs to relocate 29 classrooms (to serve incoming freshmen and temporary instructional needs) and that Core Construction provided a job-order quote to move 16 double-wide portables into a fenced, serviced complex on the high school site. The presentation said the portables will include steps, ramps, canopies, temporary utilities, fire-alarm connections and can be used while construction and renovation occur inside the main building. Staff told trustees some portables that are not structurally sound will be auctioned or demolished rather than moved.
Board materials initially included a numeric line that was mis-transcribed in public remarks; staff clarified the recommended contract total is $1,304,228.25 (one million three hundred four thousand two hundred twenty-eight dollars and 25 cents), not $1.3 billion. The presenter and project managers said the initial mover proposals had exceeded $2 million but that the recommended contractor could complete the work at the $1.3 million level.
Staff said the city is charging a building-permit fee for each double portable to review temporary utility drawings; the district cited a fee of $125 per double portable. The district also described a plan to sell portables that are no longer needed after the project to recoup funds.
Nut Graf: Trustees approved the contractor and budget for temporary modular instruction at the high school to accommodate CTE and other construction work; staff emphasized the work is temporary, that portables will be equipped with utilities and emergency egress hardware, and that the district will seek to sell excess units when the project is complete.
Background: Presenters said the project needs to be completed quickly and that city requirements call for portables to be removed once work is finished; staff said moved units will remain on site only during construction and will be disconnected from temporary utilities when they are removed.
Ending: Staff said scope-of-work documents and an itemized proposal will be provided to trustees and that communications with affected campuses and families will continue as the district stages the moves this spring.
