Wallingford-Swarthmore board unanimously elects Dr. Russell Johnston as superintendent

The Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board on Feb. 24 voted 9-0 to elect Dr. Russell Johnston as the district's permanent superintendent, with Johnston saying he will begin a listening-and-learning process when he arrives on May 1.

The unanimous vote followed the board's multi-stage search; Mrs. Witkowski Smith moved the appointment and Mrs. Williams seconded the motion. Board members praised Johnston's background and fit for the district during a round of comments before the roll call.

Dr. Russell Johnston, the superintendent-elect, told the board he has reviewed board meetings and visited the district's five schools. “The most important thing that I want you to know about my leadership is that I listen and I learn to inform every action I take,” Johnston said. He said he will “shrink any distance” between himself and district educators, administrators, students and families after May 1.

Board members who spoke during the meeting described the search as competitive and called Johnston a collaborative leader. Doctor Grande said the board had “a great process” and an “outstanding candidate.” Other members noted his experience in special education and his communication style.

The appointment is recorded as approved in the board's roll call: Ms. Doolay (aye), Doctor Grande (aye), Mrs. Holbert (aye), Mr. Miller (aye), Mrs. Wotman (aye), Ms. Woodsett (aye), Mrs. Williams (aye), Ms. Racquel Smith (aye), Mr. Henrich (aye). The board's announcement said Johnston will assume the role beginning May 1.

Next steps discussed by board members included finalizing preliminary goals and objectives with the new superintendent. Board members said they will collaborate with Johnston to refine those objectives in the coming months.
