Company accepts responsibility for damaged bus stop north of Mineral; county to seek replacement at no cost

County commissioners said Monday a bus stop that had been paid for by a local renewable-energy company was damaged by a vehicle; the company has acknowledged responsibility and is arranging repair or replacement at no cost to the county.
Commissioners said the bus stop — built with a company donation of $30,000 — was found heavily damaged. A county deputy and a ranger investigated and the company that provides services nearby reviewed footage from vehicle cameras. A company manager told county officials that a pickup and gooseneck trailer hauling a skid loader made contact with the structure and the operator has been terminated.
County staff said the original contractor that installed the bus stop has been contacted and will inspect the damage; insurance representatives from the responsible company are expected to come to the site. County engineering staff found bolts sheared off and bent girders; the county roped off the area and placed cones to protect children and pedestrians while a replacement is arranged. County officials said the repair and replacement work is expected to be completed at the company’s expense and will not require county funds.
Commissioners emphasized the safety issue because the structure serves schoolchildren and said they were relieved the responsible party had been identified and had begun the process to make repairs.
