Council removes minimum corkage fee, requires businesses to post their corkage policy

The Lake Forest City Council on Feb. 18 approved an ordinance amending the city code to change the municipal approach to corkage fees. The amendment removes the prior $10 minimum corkage fee and allows individual food and beverage establishments to set their own corkage terms and fees, provided they make the policy publicly available.
During second reading, the council clarified the amendment’s main element: businesses must publish their corkage policy either on menus or near their liquor license so that customers can see the terms. An alderman asked how posting would be enforced; staff indicated enforcement would likely be complaint-based and handled either through the liquor commission or by inspection when a complaint is received.
The council took no public comment on the item and approved the ordinance on a roll-call vote recorded as 7 yeas and 0 nays.
