The Ohio House on Feb. 12 adopted Senate Joint Resolution 5 to confirm the governor’s appointment of Jim Tressel as lieutenant governor by a vote of 68 affirmative and 27 negative votes.
Representative Plummer, speaking in favor, outlined Tressel’s background in higher education and college football and said he “has the ability to build relationships and find solutions” and is “ready to join our team.”
Representative Brent requested a recorded “no” vote in opposition, citing Jim Tressel’s historical association with policies that led to the Academic Distress Commission (formerly stemming from House Bill 70) and arguing that those policies had long‑term negative effects in some school districts. “This academic distress commission that Jim came up with is not effective, is not working,” Brent said.
Other members defended Tressel’s experience. Representative Byrd said Tressel’s long career as a listener and collaborator prepared him for the role, and Representative Troy provided historical context about how the constitution allows the governor to name a replacement lieutenant governor subject to legislative approval.
The clerk recorded 68 affirmative votes and 27 negative votes; the joint resolution was adopted and the appointment confirmed as provided under Article 3, Section 17a of the Ohio Constitution.
