County committee receives consultant report recommending kennel and protocol changes at animal shelter

The Christian County Fiscal Court heard an update Feb. 11 on a consultant visit to the county animal shelter and the committee’s plans to act on the consultant’s recommendations.
A veterinarian who works with a regional shelter completed a site visit and produced a nine-page report, the court was told. The county’s animal shelter committee has received the report and plans to meet quickly, before the county budget cycle, to identify priority items. The speaker said some recommendations require funding but several are operational fixes that could be implemented without large expenditures.
The consultant recommended measures intended to shorten length of stay, reduce disease transmission and lower stress for animals; the court member described possible kennel redesigns and procedural changes and said the committee was also given ideas for potential grants and outside groups that could assist. The speaker praised shelter manager Melissa and other staff for existing protocols and for their work during the consultant visit.
The court said it will pursue grant opportunities and consider kennel reconfiguration and other steps during upcoming budget discussions.
