Coweta commissioners approve routine contracts, appointments and budget updates

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 9 approved a series of routine contracts, appointments and budget amendments by unanimous votes.
Key actions included:
- Renewal of an agreement with Faithful Guardian to continue facilitating clinical field experience (EMT and paramedic ride-alongs). Staff said the contractor requests a signature every two years; no change to contract terms was requested.
- Approval of a six-month indigent defense services agreement with the superior court public defender. Staff explained the change aligns with a judicial-circuit split effective Jan. 1 and that the county had previously appropriated $750,399 for fiscal year 2025. The new six-month contract (Jan. 1'June 30) includes an additional estimated $12,415 for office space costs that county facilities can reclass into the public defender budget, offset partially by savings in state-paid supplements.
- Acceptance of the FY2024 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) award of $56,198 from the U.S. Department of Justice; no local match required. The board authorized execution of the required certifications and assurances.
- Award and approval of a low bid of $82,000 to CGS LLC for roof replacement at Fire Station 12 (Ebenezer Church Road). Staff said the roof is original to the station and has leaking issues.
- Approval of a budget amendment to add a weekday (Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) of service at the Welcome Road compactor site due to increased volume; the board approved the associated FY25 budget amendment.
- Appointment approvals: county attorney appointment (Glover and Davis firm; Nathan Lee identified as county attorney), county clerk and deputy clerk appointments (Shannon Zirangi and Fran Collins), and reappointments to various boards including economic development and zoning appeals.
- Authorization to host the regional high school mock-trial competition at the Justice Center Feb. 1; sheriff's office to provide on-site staff for security. The board also approved surplusing a county vehicle formerly used by fire rescue.
All motions in this group passed unanimously; staff noted some items required ministerial follow-up such as contract execution and budget accounting reclassifications.
