Coweta commissioners adopt amendments to animal ordinance; changes to definitions, noise and aggressive-animal rules

Coweta County commissioners on Jan. 9 approved amendments to Chapter 10 (Animals) of the Coweta County Code of Ordinances to address enforcement gaps in animal-related provisions.
County staff said the red-lined amendment replaces the current definition of an 'abandoned animal' with more detailed language, expands applicability from dogs to any animal where appropriate, clarifies prohibited conduct under the animal-noise ordinance, and replaces the undefined term 'severe' with the defined term 'serious' in the aggressive-animal ownership section to improve enforceability.
Staff asked that the ordinance changes become effective Feb. 3 to allow administrative updates. The board approved the amendment unanimously.
Officials said the changes respond to enforcement experience and are intended to give animal services clearer tools to protect animals and public safety; no changes to fees or staffing were included in the ordinance amendment.
