Coweta commissioners approve surplus of former Fire Station 12; Habitat for Humanity discussion noted

Coweta County commissioners on Jan. 9 approved placing a one-acre parcel formerly known as Fire Station 12 (2141 Highway 154, District 1) into surplus and authorized follow-up steps including demolition of a derelict structure.
County staff described the parcel's history: acquired in 1985 for a volunteer fire station subject to a reversionary clause, included in a larger 1986 conveyance, repurposed for fleet maintenance and storage beginning in 1999, and conveyed clear to the county by quitclaim deed in 2017 for $7,000. Staff said the existing structure is in disrepair and no longer provides a beneficial county use.
The board's motion to surplus the property carried unanimously. Mr. Fouts told commissioners there have been discussions with Habitat for Humanity about constructing a home on the site should the board approve surplusing; staff indicated any demolition and transfer would follow required procedures.
The action directs staff to proceed with demolition planning and surplus disposition; board members also said they would seek to send letters of thanks to partner agencies that assisted county services in other matters discussed during the meeting.
