Summary
At its Feb. 11 meeting the Southfield Board of Education approved the consent agenda, accepted a personnel action report listing retirements and a recruitment plan, selected a Region 8 MASB representative and authorized bond-funded renovation contracts for Thompson, Boerne and Levy schools.
The Southfield Board of Education on Feb. 11 approved its consent agenda and several actionable items, including a personnel action report that lists employees planning to retire June 30, 2025, and bond-funded construction contracts for renovations at Thompson K–8, Boerne K–8 and Levy schools.
The board moved quickly through routine minutes and consent items before taking up three construction bid packages paid from bond funds. The board voted to make those three bid reports actionable and authorized contracts for the Thompson, Boerne and Levy renovation projects. Trustees also approved a personnel action report and voted on the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) Region 8 director election.
The personnel action report included a list of staff who have announced retirements effective June 30, 2025, and a district plan to post all fall 2025 vacancies by March 1, 2025, to reduce staffing disruption. Superintendent Jennifer Green told trustees the district will invite retirees to return under state rules that permit retirees to be rehired and is working with college and university partners to recruit newly qualified teachers.
The board voted to submit a Region 8 MASB director ballot favoring Roderick Means of Westwood Community School District after trustees individually stated their preferences. The board also approved three separate bid packages for bond-funded renovations at Thompson (which will receive a new elevator, gym floor, HVAC upgrades and air conditioning), Boerne (HVAC and security entry upgrades, new flooring and fire alarm upgrades) and Levy (comprehensive single-floor renovation, new terrazzo and STEM/eSports lab). Bond funds were identified as the funding source for the construction contracts.
Trustees discussed bid awards and were told that some lowest bidders were disqualified for mathematical errors or incomplete bids; the board packet included cover letters and award recommendations that name any disqualifications and the responsible award rationale.
