District expands internships with Terrebonne Arc’s Cajun Confections; Special Olympics track meet set for March 13

A district supervisor updated the board on an interagency internship with Terrebonne Arc (Cajun Confections) that began Dec. 2. The program places 2–3 students from participating high schools at the bakery during morning hours for work‑based learning. The students are accompanied by a paraprofessional and, after initial weeks, began wearing Cajun Confections shirts to blend into the workforce environment.
The program initially used district transportation but now uses public transit to provide the work‑experience trip and to teach travel skills. Supervisors said the bakery developed daily lesson plans so students rotate through different bakery skills — frying beignets, making candy, serving customers — and that participating students are building resumes and possibly leading to employment opportunities.
The supervisor also reported on Special Olympics activities: the district held a bowling event in the fall and plans a track meet on March 13 at Terrebonne High Stadium starting at 9 a.m., with 25‑ and 50‑meter events, run/walk/assisted categories and field‑event simulations. Adaptive PE teachers and volunteers will staff the event, and the district invited community volunteers.
The board praised the internship program and the Special Olympics plans and discussed potential expansion of employer partners and volunteer involvement. No formal action was taken; staff said volunteer forms will be posted online and the district will continue to expand partner opportunities.
