Policy committee to recommend removing citizen-advisory committee, urges public to join standing panels

Members of the Sumter School District Policy Committee discussed a proposal to remove the district's separate citizen-advisory committee on the basis that public members now serve on standing board committees.
Chair Brian Austin told the committee public members have been invited to join standing committees but recruitment has been slow: "If there's any members of the public that's interested, please reach out to members of the board, to serve on either the finance policy or facilities committee." Trustee comments noted the citizen-advisory committee was not actively used under the previous board and that having community members on standing committees would better integrate public input.
The committee agreed to recommend the proposed removal to the full board and to encourage trustees to recruit residents to serve on standing committees. No formal vote was recorded at the committee meeting; staff will forward the recommendation to the full board for action.
