Facilities committee reviews Crestwood stadium progress, Maywood concession and recommends $200,000 bond reallocation

The Sumter School District Facilities Committee heard progress reports Thursday on several bond-funded construction projects — including Crestwood High School’s stadium and the Maywood concession building — and recommended that $200,000 from the Fall 2024 bond food-service allocation be transferred to other facility needs for the full board to consider.
Committee members were shown that Crestwood’s new turf field and track are complete, home and visitor bleachers have been installed, and remaining work includes driveway surfacing, sidewalks and other finishing items before a ribbon-cutting can be scheduled. “As it relates to the Crestwood project, we have been identified additional costs … the request for 800 additional seats on the visitor side,” Sumter School District Chief Financial Officer Shatika Spearman said, adding the district must also account for additional restroom plumbing required by regulations.
The updates matter because the projects are funded from the district’s Fall 2024 bond and changes affect how that money is allocated and what work can be completed this school year. Crestwood’s expanded seating and required plumbing could raise the project’s budget needs; the district is soliciting quotes for the extra visitor seating.
District staff presented the Crestwood details first. According to the committee presentation, the turf installation and track resurfacing are finished and game clocks are in place. Staff said both home- and visitor-side bleachers are in place; the visitor side has requested additions that require further cost estimates. Remaining site work called out by staff included driveway surfacing and installation of sidewalks.
Maywood’s concession building is nearly complete, staff reported. The district said remaining items include installation of urinals, commodes and final flooring; the target completion date is the Friday following the meeting so the facility will be available for the start of track season. A district representative noted that Mr. Kato has been overseeing final contractor progress.
Committee members also discussed athletics fields at Sumter High and Lakewood, including whether turf or natural grass will be used. Staff said the prior bond language gave the board discretion to modify some projects, and they requested the facilities committee refer decisions about Sumter High/Lakewood field surfaces back to the full board for discussion.
On funding, staff told the committee that food service has additional funding sources available outside the $200,000 currently allocated in the Fall 2024 bond. To better use bond resources for immediate facility needs, staff recommended transferring that $200,000 from the bond’s food-service line to other facility projects. The committee agreed to forward the recommendation to the full board for action; no formal vote on the transfer took place at the committee meeting.
The committee chair said the recommended transfer and the question of field surfaces will be taken to the full board for further discussion and decision. Staff asked committee members and the public to visit the Crestwood site to view the completed work before a ribbon-cutting is set.
No formal motions or votes on the bond transfer or field-surface decisions were recorded at the committee meeting.
