Board hears updates to Academic Opportunities Guide, adds Wilson Business Academy and Pointer School courses

Miss Maggie Goss, director of student support services, highlighted a new Florence 1 Business Academy to be housed at Wilson High School with initial pathways including banking services, marketing analytics and merchandising; the academy will offer honors versions of those courses. She also described the Pointer School of Healthcare Innovation, under renovation and expected to open in January 2026, which will add public-health courses and expanded clinical partnerships with local hospital systems.
Miss Goss outlined state-mandated course changes: the district will remove Algebra 3 and Probability & Statistics and add new state-recommended courses such as Reasoning and Mathematics, Applications and Modeling, and Statistical Modeling. The guide also adds a personal-finance offering to meet a graduation requirement, places entrepreneurship and other business courses in honors offerings, and creates pathway compressions so seniors can complete multi-level CTE sequences (for example, culinary arts and welding) in a single year.
Spanish-immersion students who began at DelMay nine years ago will enter ninth grade in the fall at West Florence High School; 27 students are expected to enroll in Spanish 3 honors and then move into dual enrollment in tenth grade to pursue the biliteracy seal. Miss Goss also described new AP and elective offerings at Wilson (AP World History and expanded percussion codes) and said journalism production will move to an after-school club due to low course requests.
The board heard that internship descriptions were clarified, new medical-terminology and fundamentals-of-computing courses were added for CTE and family-and-consumer-science pathways, and that some course offerings (current events sequences and multicultural studies) were removed due to low or no requests. The district plans to continue adding partnerships and internships tied to the new Business Academy and Pointer School; Miss Goss said additional program details and internship arrangements will follow in coming months.
