The Orange County Legislature approved a resolution creating a housing task force to study and recommend actions on housing affordability and supply, citing section 2.2 of the Orange County charter and article 5, paragraph G of legislative guidance.
Kevin Hine, chairman of the Orange County Legislature, said the proposal grew from ideas by several legislators and community members and emphasized the link between job creation and local housing availability. “We don’t want to create jobs for people that live elsewhere,” Hine said, arguing the county should help residents stay local when jobs are created.
Hine said the task force’s planned membership includes economic development stakeholders and builders seeking grant assistance. He noted discussions with county staff who already work in this area and described the effort as partly educational for legislators and the public. One legislator said he wanted to be on the committee; members moved to amend the resolution to keep a legislator slot in the membership and then voted on the amendment and the underlying resolution. Both votes passed by voice vote.
The resolution will also proceed to the rules committee, per the legislative process referenced during discussion. The task force is intended to meet with developers, economic-development partners and county staff to identify local strategies to increase affordable housing options and coordinate grant-seeking activities.
