Orange County executive advises caution, not panic, after federal grant pause

The County Executive told the Orange County Ways and Means Committee that a new federal administration action placing a temporary pause on certain discretionary grant awards had gone into effect and that county leaders should monitor the situation closely.

He said the pause — described in public reporting as a temporary review of earmarks and certain discretionary funding — had generated uncertainty about which programs might be affected and that national and state associations such as the National Association of Counties were engaged. The executive said lawsuits had already been filed in federal court challenging the pause and that a temporary restraining order was possible while courts consider the matter.

The executive urged county legislators and staff not to panic, noting the county’s primary revenue sources are sales tax, federal and state aid and property tax. He said county staff would continue to track any specific programs at risk and that, if necessary, the county could coordinate with state or federal representatives or consider legal actions. He also said local officials should be prepared to explain planned uses of federal funds if reviews continue.

Committee members asked for updates on specific grant lines and for assurance that major programs would continue; the executive said he did not believe the county’s major programs were immediately at risk but advised vigilance and close coordination with New York State Association of Counties and the National Association of Counties.
