School committee approves DECA state and international trips; advisers warn rising costs limit access

DECA advisor Brent Jansen told the committee 26 students planned to attend the Boston conference and that the team advanced through district-level competition. He said work was underway to finalize logistics and cited a state-prep night to practice role plays with local businesses.
High cost and equity concerns: Jansen and other advisers noted the substantial expense for international competition — estimates of roughly $2,000 per student for the ICDC (advisor noted actual expenses vary and include lodging, registration and travel) — and asked the committee and community to help students who lack funds to attend. The advisor said many students benefit from the experience but that fundraising remains a major hurdle to expand access.
Votes: The committee approved both trips unanimously.
