Board hears plan for portables, parking and bond task force timeline

The Orting School District board on Tuesday reviewed short‑term facility measures and an upcoming bond planning schedule that district leaders said are designed to handle projected enrollment growth.
Superintendent Hatzenbeaver told the board the district has confirmed delivery of four portables that will be staged in the high school south parking lot; three will be placed there and another portable will arrive later. The district said the portables are “dry” (no restrooms inside) and described plans to keep two southern classrooms at the high school available for restroom use for bus drivers, transportation staff and students. The presentation said portables arriving in spring break are expected to take months to make ready for fall learning because of required ramps, electrical, technology infrastructure, painting and furniture.
Hatzenbeaver also said the district plans to develop parking on property at 510 Washington, which the district owns and reported as 65 acres. The presentation described a plan to grade and apply a permeable substrate that staff said would create roughly 70 to 100 parking spaces to offset about 60 spaces that the district expects to lose at the high school during reconfiguration. District staff said some fruit trees on the site will be grafted and moved or salvaged by the agriculture program where feasible.
On capital planning, the superintendent said a bond task force application pool had 14 applicants and that directors Madigan and Thibodeaux would review applicants. The district plans a five‑to‑six meeting committee schedule starting in March, with a target of a May 1 board work session for the committee to present its recommendation on a potential future bond.
Why it matters: District officials said the portables and parking plan are interim steps to manage near‑term space needs while the bond task force works on a recommendation the board could consider as part of future capital planning. The board asked staff to make communications to families and staff about timing and traffic impacts. District staff acknowledged portables will alter traffic patterns and said they will finalize a communication plan and walk routes with administrators before students return from spring break.
The board did not take formal action on the portables or parking plan at the meeting; staff said notices to families and staff would be issued in the coming week.
