Mayor, police warn Batavia seniors about tollway-related phone scam; outreach planned

Mayor Jeffrey D. Schulke used his Feb. 17 report to warn Batavia residents—particularly seniors—about a phone-and-mail scam impersonating the Illinois Tollway that asks for updated credit-card information and threatens collections.
Schulke said he and other residents received identical notices that the Tollway account had gone into collections and that the phone number provided began with an international prefix (63), consistent with a Philippines-based number. The mayor said the Tollway does not handle account updates in that manner and described the contact as a scam intended to capture credit-card information.
Schulke said the city’s police administration under the new chief has been visiting senior-living communities to warn residents about scams and other crime patterns that target older adults. He said police have advised residents to be suspicious of unsolicited calls asking for credit-card numbers and that the department would continue outreach across senior communities.
The mayor said he will share his correspondence with the Illinois Tollway director during an upcoming meeting and urged residents to report suspicious contacts to police rather than provide financial information.
