Council approves license for Theater Puget Sound to operate space in Seattle Center Armory

The Seattle City Council on Feb. 18 unanimously approved a license agreement that will let Theater Puget Sound manage and operate space in the Seattle Center Armory for use by nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists.
The measure, Council Bill 1209309, was reported out of the Parks, Public Utilities and Technology Committee and passed on a 9-0 roll call. Councilmember Sara Nelson, council president, called the roll and confirmed the unanimous vote.
In committee, Councilmember Andrew Hollingsworth, who chaired the hearing, described the agreement as a long-running partnership. "This agreement speaks to the partnership and collaboration to provide this critical service for our artists," Hollingsworth said, noting the relationship has spanned "over 25 years." He urged the full council to approve the bill.
Councilmember Dan Kettle, speaking in support on the floor, said the licensing arrangement creates stability for Theater Puget Sound and the wider Seattle Center arts ecosystem. "It really sets us up for the changes that are coming," Kettle said, citing forthcoming projects such as the Memorial Stadium work and describing the Armory as "a great opportunity to bring community together."
Director Marshall Foster of Seattle Center was recognized in the committee report; council members thanked Foster and Theater Puget Sound for their work. The bill requires Seattle Center to execute the license agreement and authorizes the department to enter the contract with Theater Puget Sound.
The council chair signed the bill after passage. The legislation and supporting materials will be filed with the clerk.
Votes at the Feb. 18 meeting show nine in favor, none opposed. The ordinance number cited in the clerk record is Council Bill 1209309; additional contract details were not specified on the council floor.
