Student leaders report on district SGA conference and food drive

Zoey Banzer, Student Government Association president and superintendent's student advisory council (SCC) representative from Lake Minneola High School, updated the board on SCC activities and recent student events.
Banzer said SCC hosted a student leadership conference on Jan. 11 at Lake Minneola High School attended by "almost 300 students" representing SGAs from the district's eight schools. The event included a panel of former students and breakout workshops on fundraising, mental health, organization and communication. She said local businesses such as Flowdash supported fundraising efforts and noted a community race scheduled the following Saturday.
The conference also included a special project: a collaborative food drive with the Neighborhood Center of South Lake. Banzer reported, "We collected 251 pounds worth of food, which is equivalent to 209 meals," and that donations were still coming in. She counted "103 cans" and said several schools delivered large boxes of donations.
Banzer said SCC is planning a feminine hygiene product drive to distribute items over the summer and a meet-and-greet to connect student leaders with community members and businesses for internship and job opportunities. She also said SCC is developing a constitution to define purpose, core values and responsibilities so future councils can maintain consistency across schools. The next SCC meeting is scheduled for March 3.
