Sunnyside board approves 2025–26 academic calendar with July 30 start

The Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board voted unanimously Jan. 14 to adopt the district's 2025–26 academic calendar, which, as presented, begins July 30 and concludes the following May 21.
Kathy Sheppey and district staff reported that the calendar draft had been discussed with interest‑based bargaining stakeholders and that the district compared neighboring districts' start and holiday dates when developing the proposal. The district said the final draft included only one option that stakeholders were willing to pursue and that it added Ocasio's start date to the calendar.
Board members asked procedural questions about start and end dates and expressed appreciation for the work producing the calendar. A motion to approve the 2025–26 academic calendar carried on a unanimous roll call vote: Miguel Bustamante, Ricardo Jaramillo, Ted Rodriguez and Becky Quintero all voted "aye." The board noted the calendar preserves a Wednesday start pattern that staff said helps roll out the school year.
The calendar item was recorded as an action item and will be the district's official school schedule for next year unless future board action amends it.
