California Volunteers in a public service announcement urged Californians to prepare for more frequent wildfires, drought and extreme heat, and outlined steps residents can take to reduce risk and strengthen community resilience.
"In California, climate change is driving more frequent wildfires, drought, and extreme heat, making it more important than ever to be prepared," California Volunteers said. The announcement recommended basic preparedness steps including an emergency kit with water, food, a flashlight and important documents.
The message advised including reusable items such as water bottles and containers to reduce waste, and recommended clearing dry brush and creating defensible space around homes to reduce wildfire risk. The announcement also stressed the importance of having and practicing an evacuation plan.
Listeners were told to stay informed about extreme heat warnings and air-quality alerts from local officials, to drink plenty of water and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with health conditions. "When neighbors help each other during emergencies, we strengthen our community and resilience," the announcement said.
The announcement framed preparedness as both immediate safety steps and long-term adaptation: "It's about building resilience for the future and ensuring we can bounce back stronger together." It concluded by encouraging residents to take the Climate Action Counts pledge to be disaster ready.
No formal actions, votes or legal requirements were cited in the announcement.
